Meaning “prosperous harbour” in Chinese, Sengkang was derived from a small road called Lorong Sengkang. Long ago, a fishing port was location along Serangoon River. There were fishing villages and rubber plantations.
Prior to the government redevelopment of the area, area was covered with tropical rainforest. There were pig and vegetable farms around the area. Few 4 storeys HDB blocks were located along Punggol Road. These few HDB were enbloc for the current high rise HDB apartments.
Today, you see Sengkang as a up and coming HDB new town with various popular shopping complex like Compasspoint Mall, Rivervale Mall, Rivervale Plaza, Seletar Mall built. There is a featured swimming complex in Anchorvale CC along with a 24 hrs Macdonalds. Nearby Jalan Kayu estate famous for supper treat of Indian food (Roti Prata) is also planned for redevelopment into a area like our Holland Village.
Located in Compasspoint itself, there is a public library and this shopping complex is attached to the bus interchange and MRT/LRT station as well as condominium. The Seletar Mall in Fernvale which houses Sengkang’s first cineplex, opened in 2014.
A new general hospital and a community hospital has been planned in Sengkang to serve the residents in Northeast area, stated to be ready by 2018. It will be located along Sengkang East Road.
